Surges and Spikes

Surges and Spikes, some time known as transients, are major disturbances in the normal AC electrical waveform, typically produced by lightning and utility switching operations. Certain equipment within buildings, such as copiers, HVAC systems, elevators etc can also be sources of surges and spikes. Studies have shown that up to 100 major transients per month occur on commercial distribution lines, and at least one report suggests that the total business cost of electrical transients each year is approximately $25 billion.

Powergy Clean Power Systems suppress surges and spikes via the use of Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) which consist of two plates of metal separated by a ceramic material. In the event of a surge or spike, the ceramic material reduces its resistance and allows electricity to pass through. By doing so, the MOVs absorb the transient energy which would have been absorbed by sensitive equipment. Under normal conditions, the ceramic material does not conduct electricity. MOVs can respond to provide protection in as little as 10 nanoseconds (0.00000001 second).

Benefits of Powergy's surge and spike protection include:
  • Longer equipment life
  • Less down-time of sensitive equipment
  • Lower maintenance costs on equipment
